MCE Internation Choral Festival 2020

MCE International Choral Festival is back again! 

The festival will take place in Kuala Lumpur Performing Art Center (KLPAC), from the 11-16 November 2020. 

Rules and regulations are as below. 

 

Category

A: Children

Description

Age

Each choir must prepare a programme of TWO (2) contrasting pieces, both freely chosen, which may be accompanied or unaccompanied.
If accompanied, they should be with Piano and/or small percussion instruments ONLY.

7-12 years old

A minimum of 20 singers (excluding Conductor and Accompanist)
No maximum number of singers

A maximum pure singing time of 8 minutes

B: Teenage

Description

13-19 years old

C: Mixed Youth (SATB / SAB)

If accompanied, they should only be with a Piano and/or small percussion instruments ONLY.

Up to 26 years old

A minimum of 20 singers (excluding Conductor and Accompanist)
No maximum number of singers

A maximum pure singing time of 8 minutes

D1: Equal Voices (Female – SA)

Description

D2: Equal Voices (Male – TB)

E: Mixed Voices (SATB/SAB)

G: Folklore

Description

Age

Each choir must prepare a contrasting programme of TWO (2) pieces, both freely chosen, which may be accompanied or unaccompanied.
Ethnic costumes, dances and instruments are welcome, but no set-up time will be given.

H: Vocal Ensemble

Works from Popular, Jazz and Musical Theatre pieces are NOT ALLOWED in this category

A minimum of 4 singers but less than 20 singers (excluding Conductor and Accompanist)

A maximum pure singing time of 8 minutes

I: Pop Vocal Ensemble

Description

Performance Duration

Each choir must prepare a programme of TWO (2) contrasting pieces, from Popular, Jazz or Musical Theatre genres. Both songs freely chosen, which may be accompanied or unaccompanied.

If accompanied, they should only be with a Piano and/or small percussion instruments ONLY

No age limit

A minimum of 4 singers but less than 20 singers (excluding Conductor and Accompanist)

A maximum pure singing time of 8 minutes

Competition Rules and Regulations

1. The minimum number of singers allowed (not inclusive of conductor and accompanist) in each Category is 20 singers, there is NO maximum number of singers allowed for each Category. (except vocal ensemble category)

2. Organizers will allow participation of up to 20% of the singers, under/above the age limit.

3. A Piano is available for all categories (Drum kit and amplifier will be provided for Pop Vocal Ensemble Category only). Recorded playbacks or backing tracks are NOT allowed. Choirs are welcome to perform pieces in any language and from any time period, including original compositions or commissions. Choirs are encouraged to choose works that highlight their particular talents, cultural background and demonstrate a range of musical styles.

4. Each choir is allowed a maximum pure singing time of 8 minutes. This is NOT inclusive of walking on and off the stage. Choirs exceeding the maximum pure singing time will be penalized 2 points for every 1 minutes, from their total score.

5. Each choir must submit FIVE (5) sets of scores for the Jury, along with their Registration form. This may be in the form of hard copies of scores or licensed electronic copies obtained from the publisher or composer. Scores must be original scores, and will be returned to the conductor/choirs during Meet the Jury session. Submitted scores must be in conventional stave notation.

6. The conductor of a choir may be allowed to conduct a different choir or choirs in either categories of the Competition.

7. The Organizers reserve the right to record performances of choirs during the Competition, as well as during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for archive purposes.

8. After your competition, all copies of original scores, must be collected in person from the Registration Desk at a designated time given to you in your detailed schedule. Festival Organizers will not be responsible for mailing the scores to you after the event.

Evaluation and Judging Criteria

1. The Competition Jury will consist of a panel of national and international choral experts.

2. The evaluation of the Competition will be based on an internationally recognized evaluation system, according to the following criteria:

  • Technical Evaluation
    1. Intonation
    2. Sound quality of the choir
    3. Fidelity to the score (General Categories); Authenticity (Folklore and Pop Vocal Ensemble only)
  • Artistic Evaluation
    1. Overall artistic impression
  •  

3. The final result is calculated from the total sum of all final scores of the jury.

Prizes and Awards

1. All choirs will be awarded the following Diplomas, as determined by final scores from the Jury:

GOLD Diploma

A grade   90 points and above
B grade   85 points to 89.99 points
C grade   80 points to 84.99 points

SILVER Diploma

A grade   75 points to 79.99 points
B grade   70 points to 74.99 points
C grade   65 points to 69.99 points

BRONZE Diploma

A grade   60 points to 64.99 points
B grade   55 points to 59.99 points
C grade   40 points to 54.99 points

2. All choirs will receive written copies of their adjudicated scores.

3. Choirs which do not receive a Diploma will receive a Certificate of Participation for their performances.

4. The Jury maygive out Special Awards at their discretion.

5. All results of the Jury will be considered final and cannot be contested.

6. The choir which is awarded a GOLD Diplomawith the highest marks will be named Category Winner of the respective category.

The Grand Prix Competition:

Each Category Winner will be invited to compete in the Grand Prix Competition on Sunday, 15th November, 2020 in the morning. For the Grand Prix Competition, choirs will perform a contrasting programme of TWO (2) pieces, both freely chosen, and must not be repeated from the earlier competition rounds

Competition Participation and Event Package Fees

Registration deadline is Friday, 31st July 2020. All necessary documents including original scores and completed Registration Form must reach the Festival Organizers by this date.

– To participate in this event, payment of Registration Fee (per choir) as well as the Event Package (per person) is required.

– Fees for both the Registration Fee and Event Package are shown below.

– To register for an Additional Category, Early Bird Registration Fee is USD 200 per category, per choir. For Regular closing date, the fee is USD 300 per category, per choir.

– Upon registration, choirs must pay a deposit of 50% of total amount. If paying FULL Amount before the Regular Closing date (July 31st), choirs will receive a discount of 5% of the total amount. There is no discount for any additional categories. Choirs will receive an invoice with the amount of fees to be paid upon registration.

-We will preliminarily reserve the hotel only after receipt of your 50% deposit of total amount

– All choirs must make the final payment by Friday, August 28th 2020. Any additions to the registered number of singers must be made before this date.

-We cannot guarantee the availability of all accommodation categories for choirs registering after the official registration deadline, which is July 31st, 2020.

NOTE: sightseeing/excursions are NOT included and have to be booked separately.
