Gaudeamus Youth Choir is the new name of Young Choral Academy’s (YCA) resident youth chamber choir. Comprising of 35 auditioned singers between the ages of 14 to 21, it is currently directed by three award-winning conductors – Lai Suk Yin, Terence Au and Mak Chi Hoe. Gaudeamus began life as three separate vocal ensembles namely Naturally Vocal, Vox Vivacis and New Edge Youth Chamber choirs, which were comprised of graduates of the Kuala Lumpur Children’s Choir (KLCC) and from the Academy’s external high-school choral programmes.
The main objectives and ethos of Gaudeamus’s youth choral programme at Young Choral Academy is to provide a comprehensive training platform for young singers to learn, share and perform choral music across the different genres to a high artistic level. The repertoire covered is wide-ranging – from folksongs and madrigals, from Classical to Contemporary music, and in different languages.
Gaudeamus Youth Choir made its successful debut at the 2016 Malaysian Youth Choral Festival at Wisma MCA Hall, Kuala Lumpur and performs in its own concert series – ‘Tapestry’, which features collaborative concerts with visiting choirs. Its current members come from different vocal and choral backgrounds ranging from high school to collegiate choirs. Some of its past and current members are alumni of some of the top school choirs in Malaysia, as well as the prestigious World Youth Choir and Asia-Pacific Youth Chamber Choir (APYC).
