Singing success for Malaysian choirs

Our International Sponsorship Fund supports music making of all kinds around the world. In Malaysia, the Young Choral Academy have been using their ABRSM grant to support the Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod in its 15th year. Academy founder and director Susanna Saw told us about the competition.

The Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod is a platform for choirs all over Malaysia to come together with the aim of developing higher choral singing standards. This year’s competition was held on 8 and 9 July at SJKC Yuk Chai Auditorium, Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya.

A total of 44 choirs took part, compared with 21 last year. They were competing in three different categories – primary school, secondary school and open. There were also special awards in the primary and secondary categories for Most Promising Choir and Outstanding Accompanist.

After the competition, choirs met members of the jury to discuss their performances. Each choir received comment sheets from all members of the jury, certificates for every participant and teacher, and an award for their school.

This year, thanks to support from the International College of Music, we were also able to offer all choirs a chance to participate in singing workshops with Kevin Stannard of Wolverhampton University, UK. This was an opportunity for everyone to sing together and mingle.
